Vegetables Delivered

June veggiesWant to ensure you get your share of the fresh fruits and vegetables grown in your area? Sign up for a CSA – community supported agriculture, where a farm offers a subscription to fresh produce.

How it works: Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season (taken from Local Harvest).

Many Agritourism farms offer CSA programs such as T.G. Farms, of Newcastle and Norman. T.G. Farms is accepting applications for it’s CSA. You have a unique opportunity to buy a share of the farm’s seasonal crops for 14 to 21 weeks. Each week you’ll receive a basket of farm fresh produce for less than you would spend at a grocery store. See www.tgfarms.com for joining information.

Check with your local farmers, ask about CSAs and get those vegetables delivered to you!

Peach Fried Pies – Yes Please!

Indulge this summer in succulent peach goodies such as peach fried pies made of Porter peaches. Find all the goodies at The Peach Barn, located on the corner of Highways 69 & 51B, or pick fresh peaches at Livesay Orchards, just outside of Porter.

Livesay Orchards is owned and farmed by brothers, Kent and Steve Livesay. The first peach trees were planted on the land in the 1920s, and today, there are more than 140 acres of peach trees, making this the largest peach orchard in the state. The farm also includes 10 acres of apple trees, 30 acres of watermelon and cantaloupes, 30 acres of pumpkins and gourds, 300 acres of wheat, 1,000 acres of soybeans, 600 acres of field corn, along with tomatoes, sweet corn, milo and cattle.

There is a large, open air farm market at Livesay Orchards, and about 60% of the peach harvest is sold directly to the public from the market. The market also sells other fresh fruits and vegetables, along with the farm’s famous Porter Peach Products. The remainder of the peaches are sold as U-Pick, from the orchard, or are delivered to grocery stores and fruit stands within a 200-mile radius.

The Peach Barn and Orchard, is owned by Kent and wife, Dawna, and serves as the retail store for delicious treats that visitors can enjoy at the barn or take home with them. Not surprising to find some folks enjoy the rocking chairs out front with a bowl of delicious peaches and ice cream! They feature several products from Porter peaches in the bakery for items like ice cream topped with our fresh Porter peaches, peach cobblers, whole pies and muffins. Yum!

Mark your calendars for the Porter Peach Festival, July 19-21!
